Revolutionizing Campus Convenience with Smart Locker Systems

Founded in 1898, Northeastern University is a prestigious private research institution located in Boston, Massachusetts. The university is known for its co-op education program, combining academic study with professional experience. Its underground tunnel system provides a vital passage for students, especially during harsh winter months. As part of recent renovations, Northeastern upgraded its tunnel system, installing improved flooring, lighting, signage, and modern lockers, ensuring a better student experience.

FIGURES

  • 1,286 newly installed lockers
  • Locker size: 3 feet by 2 feet

THE CHALLENGE

During the tunnel system’s renovation, Northeastern University sought a reliable and efficient electronic locking system for its new lockers. The primary goals were to eliminate the cost and inconvenience of resetting combination locks, provide students with a decentralized and integrated solution, and ensure seamless access through the university’s existing myNEU student portal. Additionally, the new system needed to be installed quickly within the summer break and fit within budget constraints while maintaining high security and ease of use.

SOLUTION

The university implemented GANTNER’s smart locking system to manage 1,286 newly installed lockers. These lockers are now larger, measuring 3 feet by 2 feet, and utilize existing Husky Student ID cards with embedded Mifare DESFire chips for contactless operation. The system integrates smoothly with the campus card infrastructure, allowing students to rent lockers through the myNEU portal. Once reserved, a student’s ID card is linked to their assigned locker, ensuring secure and exclusive access. Features such as acoustic feedback, LED lighting, and clear location labeling make locker operation intuitive. The system also enhances security with customizable alarms, remote locker management, and occupancy monitoring.

KEY BENEFITS

  • Seamless locker operation using existing student ID cards.
  • Full integration with Northeastern University’s campus card system.
  • Elimination of costs associated with combination locks.
  • Efficient and transparent locker management through digital monitoring.
  • Increased security with networked alarm systems for added protection.
  • Improved student convenience with clear labeling and easy online reservation.
